The Correlation between Playfulness and Stress Coping Behaviors of Children

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find out the correlation between playfulness and stress coping behaviors of children and to examine the gender differences in stress coping behaviors. The subjects of this study were 683 elementary school students who live in Gwangju. Pearson¡¯s correlation, t-test, and multiple regression were used to analyze the research data. The results of this study were as follows. First, children having high level of playfulness for oneself showed passive and evasive coping behaviors in stressful situation. Second, children having high level of playfulness for relationship and playfulness for oneself reported pursuit for social support in stressful situation. Third, girls used active, passive and evasive strategies, and pursuit for social support more than boys. Boys used aggressive strategy more than girls. In additions, girls have a higher level of emotional playfulness, playfulness for relationship, and playfulness for oneself than boys. Fourth in case of boys, emotional playfulness and playfulness for relationship enhanced the level of active stress coping behaviors. Among girls, however, emotional playfulness, extraordinariness, and playfulness for relationship enhanced active coping behaviors while a sense of humor and pursuit of fun lowered the level of active coping behaviors. Finally, the factors that influenced children¡¯ aggressive stress coping behaviors were a sense of humor and the pursuit of fun.
